Metaverse and TV: an even more immersive experience

Movies and TV series have in themselves the characteristic of engaging, enthralling, keeping legions of fans glued to the screen. The most dedicated participate in intense live-tweeting sessions and are led to purchase other products such as gadgets and video games. Now, however, it is time to land on the metaverse and exponentially increase its engagement rate.

The first series on the metaverse

Comedian Maccio Capatonda stars in Maccioverse, the first series in which you can interact with the show’s characters by creating your own avatar. Last September 25, on the Czech platform Somnium Space, the premiere took place, the first of a TV series entirely in the metaverse. The next day saw the release of the five episodes of Maccioverse, the viewing of which is available for streaming on the Elisium platform.

The metaverse makes possible the first transmedia film

Do any video game fans remember the film Nirvana by Gabriele Salvatores? The film starring (among others) Diego Abatantuono, Claudio Bisio and Valerio Staffelli returns after 25 years in an immersive experience to be lived in real time through social media, the metaverse, a podcast and an Alternate Reality Game (ARG): from December 15, old and new characters will interact in real time with viewers and the director on The Nemesis platform, in Rai Cinema’s virtual space. The transmedia remake will be previewed during a lectio magistralis by Salvatores at La Sapienza University’s Athenaeum Conference Center in the Department of Communication and Social Research.

Rai Cinema and metaverse: the first virtual short film

Rai Cinema is always behind the first Italian short film in the metaverse. Last Nov. 8, “Solitaire” by Edoardo Natoli was screened on the same virtual space as Nirvana. The next day, the short film was released on Rai Cinema Channel, Rai Cinema’s free on-demand online platform. A journey begun in 2019 by the national broadcaster with the launch of the first virtual reality app. Rai Cinema’s metaverse, accessible from a PC or smartphone without the need for registration, allows users to watch free film content, experience streaming events, visit exhibits with NFT, interact with iconic cinema objects, and explore Rai Cinema Island. Therefore, no longer the 3D glasses of the early 1910s, but VR as a new object of movie enjoyment.
